Bagpipe Lessons
So you love the sound of the bagpipes, and wonder if you could learn to make
that sound . . . Of course you can! All you need is the desire to learn, the
commitment to work at it, and the patience to stick with it. Some of Winter’s students
have started before they turned 10 years old and some were beyond 50. Some students come
with 30 years of experience on other instruments; some have absolutely no
musical background at all; some have piping experience and want to improve their
skills or learn 'piobaireachd' (pronounced pee-brock), the classical and
original music of the
bagpipes. Whatever your situation, Winter can guide you on the path to becoming
a better bagpiper.
"Bagpipes - Easy to play badly - difficult to master."
Beginners
You will spend 6-12 months working on a ‘practice chanter’, a simple
instrument that looks like a recorder. This allows you to memorize notes and
‘grace notes’. After developing your fingering skills enough to play several
tunes from memory, you will graduate to the bagpipes. You will work on blowing
and squeezing, developing strength and proper playing posture. Winter's students
are offered the opportunity to play on a 'practice goose' and develop their
skills before making the investment in a set of pipes.
Intermediate
You will focus on blowing steady, playing ‘on the beat’ and expression. You
will be introduced to different musical forms including piobaireachd
(the
classical music of the bagpipes), strathspeys and reels. Special emphasis is
placed on the physiology of performing, helping you to be relaxed and focused
when performing in front of an audience or judge
Advanced
You will concentrate on good tone, focus, and fine tuning your skills. Winter will
assess your skills and weakness and help you become a well rounded player.
Winter’s emphasis on relaxing and focusing during performance may be even more
important at this level
Bands
You will focus on playing together, playing ‘on the beat’, playing ‘to the
center’, and other skills critical to ensemble playing. Whether your goals are
to win competitions, to play better in front of an audience or improve your
musical expression, Winter can help.
